I’m On The Move

May 27th, 2008

Well, after having passed my Part 2 test to become a driving instructor, I took a very big step today - I handed my resignation letter to my boss. I have been with the company for more than 11 years (basically the whole of my working life), so this is a major change for me. Unfortunately, due to some problems I have been having recently, it wasn’t as difficult a decision as I thought.

So, at the end of June I will be officially unemployed, but (hopefully) a week later I will get my Trainee Driving Instructor licence, and be able to start instructing pupils!

Pleased With New Website

May 5th, 2008

I am very pleased with my newest website. Confessions of a Driving Instructor was only registered on 20th April, yet 2 weeks later it is already number 4 on Google! And the top 3? Amazon, Wikipedia and the Internet Movie DataBase - some pretty stiff competition :D Unfortunately, this high position is not being translated into visitors - I am the only visitor so far

Sky Broadband Review

February 22nd, 2008

As per this post, here is my review of my Sky Broadband activation.

I requested Sky Max Broadband on 2nd February. A week later the new Netgear wireless router arrived, and on Monday (16 days after requesting activation), my broadband was activated. Top marks for speed of set up!

Once everything was set up (very quick and painless), the first thing I did was run a speed test. This reported a download speed of 6.5Mbps - not bad, but not the 16Mbps I was hoping for. That speed test appears to have been a bad result, as when updating my Ubuntu installation, I regularly download at 1.5MBps (12Mbps) - more than fast enough!

So far, I am very happy with the service. It was set up quickly (I was advised it would take 3 weeks, but it only took 2), the service has been very reliable (no outages or slow-downs yet), and customer services have been very good (they rang me on Monday to let me know that it had been activated).

I would quite happily recommend Sky Broadband to anyone :)

Failed Already!

February 3rd, 2008

The year is only a month old, and I’ve already failed one goal - to update this blog every week. My excuse is that I have been signed off work and dealing with other things.

Two bits of news - firstly, I have registered with BSM to become a driving instructor. The training course takes anything from 6 - 24 months, but I am aiming to become qualified by the end of the year.

Secondly, I applied for Sky broadband yesterday, to go along with my digital TV service. By the end of the month I should be receiving unlimited 16Mb broadband for £9 per month less than I am paying for 1Mb unlimited broadband now :D My only concern is some of the bad reports about reliability I have seen. I will keep this blog updated with the progress…

Missed Opportunities

January 7th, 2008

I have recently missed two opportunities for developing new websites. The first is an idea I had whilst on the way to work one day at the beginning of December. Then, last week on the way to work I heard on the radio a news report about a new website doing exactly the same thing as I had thought of not less than a month ago!

The second is an idea I had for a site, which I haven’t bothered to persue. I checked the perfect domain name was available, but didn’t purchase it as I was busy with other things. This weekend I decided to buy the domain name for the site, only to find that someone else purchased it at the beginning of November

The purpose of this post? It is a reminder to myself (and anyone else who may read this blog ;) ) that if you get an idea for a site, then jump on that idea straight away - otherwise someone will eventually get there before you do!
